Monolophosaurus (Jurassic World Dino-Trackers, Captivz Build N’ Battle Dinos by ToyMonster)

Today we’re looking at another highly anticipated new sculpt from the ToyMonster Captivz line, the Monolophosaurus, part of the Dino-Trackers series. This set differs from others in that each figure has a color palette that matches their assigned biome. In this case, the Monolophosaurus comes from the jungle biome. Even the slime is color coordinated in this set and in this case, it’s labeled jungle moss slime. These figures also come with a token, as opposed to the card we’ve seen in some other sets.

The Monolophosaurus stands 1.75” (4.44 cm) tall to the top of the head and measures 4.25” (10.79 cm) long, including the bend in the tail. The tail has a downward bend that is probably there as a stability safety measure but mine stands perfectly fine on just its feet. The actual Monolophosaurus, known from only a single specimen, is estimated to have measured 16.4’ (5 meters) which puts the toy at about 1/45 in scale.

Scale conscious collectors should like the small size of the figure, but accuracy pedants should as well since there’s little to complain about on that front. It is decently proportioned with inward facing hands and the head is unmistakably Monolophosaurus. Keep in mind that all we have of the genus is the skull, portions of the backbone, and hips. The tail is a bit short and spindly but the design is trying to stay faithful to that used in Camp Cretaceous.

Fine details include meticulously sculpted teeth of varying length and a slightly elevated tongue undulating within the mouth. Small scales cover most of the figure and a row of scutes, most notable on the nape, runs down the midline of the back and stops just passed the base of the tail. Sagging skin folds are apparent along the lower torso and wrinkling can be seen along the neck and limb joints. Clusters of large scales are sculpted on the back of the neck and the crest has vertical grooves etched into it.

The figure is green along the back and cool blue elsewhere, with a dark wash over the sides that highlights the scale detail. The eyes are yellow with black pupils, the teeth are white, and the tongue and inside of the mouth are pink. The paint application is excellent on this diminutive figure and the overall color scheme nicely conveys the forest biome we’re told this dinosaur lives in. The nails are not painted but that’s alright, I would have liked it if there was a splash of color on the crest though.

The Captivz Monolophosaurus is a definite highlight of the Dino-Trackers wave that should have broad appeal among collectors of both Jurassic World toys and dinosaur figures in general. I’m a sucker for small crested theropods and new Monolophosaurus figures are always exciting. This figure is currently available but being a blind bag toy, you might want to look for it online.
