Although another Triceratops is probably the last thing any of us need in our collections (certainly mine) this one from Yowie Group is decent enough to deserve some time in the spotlight on the Dinosaur Toy Blog. It comes from Yowie Groups Ultimate Dinosaur series which is currently available in various shop across the United States. Yowies are blind bag toys that come packaged in a plastic egg encased in chocolate. I didn’t choose this little Triceratops, fate chose it for me.
The Yowie Triceratops is positioned in a delightful little trot with his head slightly lowered. It is detailed with rows of large scales running down the back and sides, and wrinkles and skin folds along the limb joints. The edge of the frill is decorated with little epoccipital horns and a row of bumps can be seen running from each brow horn to the edge of the frill. The toy measures about 2.5″ (6.35 cm) in total length, giving it a scale of 1/144 when scaled down from a length of 30′ (9.1 meters).
In terms of accuracy, it is decent enough for a toy of its size and price point, but the tail is a bit too long and the forearms should be slightly splayed with the hands angled outwards. The horns are thick and blunted for safety. Digits on the feet are well defined, as are the facial features like the mouth and nostrils.
The figure is tan colored with a gray frill and gray running along the back. The horns are creamy white, as is the beak. Both the upper and lower portions of the beak are painted, unlike the Yowie Kosmoceratops where only the upper portion is painted. The paintjob is attractive and naturalistic, and the paint is well applied.
If you’re a specialized Triceratops collector (and I know the forum has at least one) then this is definitely a figure you’ll want in your collection. For everyone else, it’s probably a pass. I certainly didn’t need it but I quite like it and am happy to have it amongst my large herd of mini-Trikes. It stands out and is a charming little toy.
