Marginocephalia is a clade full of interesting species that are largely hard to define by their body, with their only real definition being their heads. There are two groups, the ceratopsians (for which the number of models are near innumerable) and the less popular pachycephalosaurs. There are many figures of them, though far from the numbers of their ceratopsian counter parts. One of the largest of this family is Pachycephalosaurus, which existed in the late Cretaceous of North America. With it’s distinctive domed head and bipedal stance, it certainly stands out as intriguing. Here is one such example, a large model by UKRD from 1991.

To the figure itself! It is pretty large, measuring 5.4″ high, 5.6″ long and 3″ wide, very large and likely too large for most standard lines. It is a pretty dull colour scheme, a mix of grey and dark grey with yellow eyes. Works well enough, but could add a dash of colour, this isn’t a sauropod sized creature (Pachycephalosaurus was roughly 1.5m high). It seems to be wandering, possibly lumbering, forward, though with slight aggression, maybe about to start a scrap! Who knows?

Now to accuracy, and one look should immediately ring alarm bells. The tail dragging upright look is quite retro and out of date, as most dinosaurs are know known to hold themselves horizontally. Otherwise, this is pretty accurate, the skull is right and the body matches what is known from other pachycephalosaurs (Pachycephalosaurus is known only from skull material). Not bad, if a little out dated.

This is a nice model, great for children to play with, but not likely to win over collectors, unless they are really into retro dinos. It is large, so will take up a large amount of room on a shelf. It’s quite durable, so would sit happily in a toy box. It is long since discontinued, so eBay is your best bet to find it if you want it.

  • It is my favorite pachycephalosaurus perhaps it is not the best of all the pachycephalosaurus made by a brand of toy dinosaur but its size perhaps one of the largest massive pachycephalosaus and that it is inspired by the great paleoartism of John Sibbick supplements all its differences and honestly I wish there were more pachycephalosaurus of that size, yes, more finished and more scientists, because that eccentric marginocephalus is a very little treated dinosaur in terms of size, I like dinosaurs without scales.

Reasonably large in a toy figure is a thing of beauty to me!

  • UKRD 1991 are one of the best lines from the company. But the XXL pachycephalosaurus sculpture is even better than this. And believe, if you think this is “large”, the other model is inmense …
