Brachiosaurus (Jurassic Era, Volcanic Lost World)

There are a lot of paint-your-own models out there, from the modern to the mythical and they can be a lot of fun. There a lot of ones for dinosaurs, so I thought I would review one. As opposed to other models I’ve reviewed, there is no building involved, so you can just pick up and go. It even comes with paints and a paint brush. And the dino of choice it the Jurassic titan Brachiosaurus. Let’s dive right in!!

The box. Complete with artwork that suggests all dinosaurs (plus Dimetrodon) existed at the same time!

Let’s get straight to the point: this is not a good representation of Brachiosaurus. The tail is too low and the skull is awful, going for a pointy bird beak as opposed to the correct skull shape, which doesn’t help the crest where the nostrils would be. The rest of the model is ok, but not great. It has a nice striding pose, good for a large herbivore like this. The model is small, measuring 3.5″ high and 4″ long, good for a juvenile maybe.

The real fun is, of course, in the painting. This set comes with a paintbrush and four paints: yellow, black, brown and green. I decided to challenge myself and try to only use the paints included (further complicated as it suggests leaving the paint 12 hours to dry). And below is the result! Went for green and brown, with yellow and black for the eyes, with the idea being that, as a juvenile, it could blend in with foliage. I did cheat a little, as I ended up using Warhammer wash, as I couldn’t get the black to thin out enough.

This isn’t really a collectors item, as it does show it’s cheapness in areas. This is more for a kids toy box, something to keep them entertained on a rainy day, and they may get great joy from it. It is available from a lot of shops, from normal stores to garden centres. If you want something for a quick amusement, this will do, but it’s not exactly worth hunting down.
