Mosasaurus (Jurassic World: Rebirth, Captivz Build N’ Battle Dinos by ToyMonster)

A new Jurassic World film is on the horizon and with it we’re getting a fresh clutch of Captivz eggs from ToyMonster. Well, sort of. There are 13 figures in total with 6 of them being repaints of previously released figures and 3 of them being slightly different sculpts of dinosaurs we’ve seen before. Only the Spinosaurus and D. rex are completely new. And while it makes sense to still include the T. rex, Quetzalcoatlus, and Velociraptor one must wonder…where is the Mutodon, Titanosaurus, and Aquilops? Although I’m disappointed that we’re getting recycled figures instead of film canon species, I still wanted to check some out, mostly with the hopes of at least getting the Spinosaurus. Since Mattel is taking priority right now, I only bought one egg on my last outing and I ended up with the Mosasaurus, a genus that will at least be featured in the movie.

Anyone who’s watched the trailer for Jurassic World: Rebirth or come across toys and other merchandise knows that the Mosasaurus has received an overhaul in design, making it more accurate to the real animal than its predecessor. I’ve always liked the JW Mosasaurus but with its fluked tail and omitted osteoderms the new one looks far superior. Because of this, I was disheartened to see that ToyMonster did not upgrade their Mosasaurus for the Captivz line. This is a Jurassic World Mosasaurus, a figure of which I already have.

This figure isn’t even painted to look like Rebirth’s Mosa, instead being teal colored with a white belly. I like the color, and thankfully more than the Color Change Mosa that I already have. That’s its only saving grace but still, it should be painted to look like Rebirth’s Mosa even if the sculpt is recycled.

This isn’t a bad sculpt though, and since it hasn’t been featured on the blog yet, I should be more balanced in my assessment. The figure is presented in a gentle U shape, resting on its flippers with its head and tail lifted skyward. From nose-to-tail is measures about 4” (10.16 cm). The largest Mosasaurus species, M. hoffmannii, reached an estimated length of 43’ (13 meters) (according to Greg Paul) and when scaled down from that length we get a scale of 1:129.  The figure comes packaged with slime in a separate bag and a trading card depicting some nice artwork of the film accurate Mosasaurus.

On the head you get well defined dentition and even pterygoid teeth on the roof of the mouth and a sculpted tongue. The body has a mostly cracked and wrinkly texture but with rows of crocodile-like scutes along the back and along the sinuous tail. It really is a fine little sculpture of the Jurassic World Mosasaurus.

Although I like the figure itself, ToyMonster really should have given us the new Mosasaurus, especially since they’re also now making mini dioramas to display these toys in. The Mosasaurus is one of the headliners for Rebirth and Toy Monster knows this because they’ve also made a larger scale Mosa for their mega-sized egg, and that one is screen accurate. It could be that ToyMonster started producing these toys before they had much information about the creature designs in Rebirth but from the perspective of a collector, this Mosasaurus, and the entire Captivz Rebirth line, is underwhelming. Moreso when you consider they’ve raised the price of the Captivz eggs by about a dollar. I don’t really like gambling with my money on blind bags as it is but make an exception of the high quality Captivz figures, a higher cost will ultimately mean fewer Captivz purchases from me.

  • I’m dissapointed that they didn’t update it, but it’s still a beautiful figure with great paint job and sculpt. I would have given it 5 stars if it was from any other line, but since it’s from rebirth, I’m giving it 4
