Protoceratops (DinoWaurs Survival)

Dinosaurs can capture the public eye and get into the spot light for many reasons. Maybe they are large and powerful. Maybe they are peculiar. Or perhaps they are so common they inspire legends. Such is the way of the ‘sheep of the Cretaceous’, Protoceratops. The bones of this small ceratopsian are so common across Mongolia, they may have inspired the legend of the Griffon, as tales spread to Greek merchants from travellers who spotted the fossil remains. Whether this is true or not, this little fellow has certainly become well known, enough to feature in the DinoWaurs Survival line, amongst titans like T. Rex and larger relative Triceratops.

To the figure! As with the other figures of the line, this one is small, at 2.4” long and 1.1” high, fittingly small in its own was. Once more, we have an all-over light grey with great shading, plus a red tongue to add a dash of colour. The pose is fairly docile, like it’s going for a nibble on some plants. Nothing much, but it works out well.

To accuracy, and this is an odd one. While it features several good points, like a squat body, raised bones along the tail and the front limbs being shorter than the back ones, there are some other bizarre choices. The frill looks like a high-end crisp, the bones under the frill are grossly over exaggerated and they have tried to give it a nasal horn that it should not have. Also, the ankle joint, much like another Protoceratops toy I reviewed, is far too high up.

This is a cute little figure, but the accuracy issues stop me from saying it’s a must have for collectors, and it is a bit small for young children. If you like it or wish to complete a collection with it, grab it. If not, you won’t miss much skipping it.

  • Indohyus, I have to tell you, I finished a review on the DInoWaurs Survival Keratocephalus. At least you didn’t tackle that or else, I’d get mad. Anyway, that Protoceratops there isn’t too bad, but not really worth it.
