Before we begin the review, I would like to thank the generous folks over at ToyMonster, for sending me this figure to share with the blog.

With the second season of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory having just dropped it seemed like a good time to share one of the show’s starring theropods, the Suchomimus. Fans of this early Cretaceous spinosaur were excited to see Suchomimus teased in the trailer but thanks to toys like this Captivz figure, astute fans knew the Suchomimus would make an appearance on the show long before the first trailer premiered.

The Captivz Suchomimus measures about 4” (10.16 cm) when factoring in the bend of the tail and stands 2” (5.08 cm) tall. The actual Suchomimus is estimated to have measured about 31-36’ (9.4-10 meters) which puts the figure at 1/93-1/108 in scale. The figure stands soundly on its feet with the head tilting rightward and the mouth open, the tail curves gently to the right and then sharply left. Figures in this series come with a collector card and the illustration on this one is particularly cool, depicting the Suchomimus fighting a hippopotamus.

The figure has a stippled texture and most of the fine details consist of wrinkles and defined musculature. Tiny teeth are sculpted within the mouth but due to thick paint application they’re hard to appreciate and it makes the figure look toothless with white lips. The downward pointing kink in the upper jaw and terminal rosette of teeth that Suchomimus is known for are missing here. The jaw is also wider than it is deep, making it look more like a crocodile snout than that of a spinosaur. Like the Jurassic World Baryonyx. The midline crest between the eyes is present though. Although Suchomimus did not have a Spinosaurus-like sail it still had tall neural spines, especially over the hips, and that isn’t shown here. The inaccuracies of the toy are largely the fault of the source material though.

The figure is painted orange with red blotches and a pale gray underside. A dark gray wash brings out some of the wrinkling, stippling, and muscle definition. The inside of the mouth is pink, and the eyes are blue with black pupils. Aside from sloppy application on the teeth, the paintjob is quite good, appearing complete and well applied.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t as excited about this figure as I was about some of the other recent Captivz figures, which is why I’ve waited so long to review it I suppose. Although I can appreciate the complex paintjob, and its ability to stand on two feet, I feel mostly indifferent about this figure. It simply doesn’t read Suchomimus to me and the Jurassic franchise just isn’t good with spinosaurs. Still, it’s not bad for what it is, a blind bag toy that costs about $5.

With the Captivz Spinosaurus.
