Review: Spinosaurus (Jurassic World: Rebirth, Tail Thrasher by Mattel)

Fans of Jurassic Park 3 were delighted when they learned that the Spinosaurus would be making a long awaited return to the franchise in Jurassic World: Rebirth, only to be quickly disappointed that the Spinosaurus got a design overhaul that leaned into a more paleo-accurate interpretation.

One of the most famous large theropod dinosaurs is also the most enigmatic. As one can see from the title, it is none other than Spinosaurus aegyptiacus. While first named in 1915 by Ernst Stromer, it was initially discovered in 1912 by Richard Markgraf in the Bahariya Formation, of Egypt.

Hailing from the Early Cretaceous of Niger, is one of my favorite theropod dinosaurs, the spinosaurid Suchomimus. Mattel released a wonderful figure of this animal earlier this year, in the short lived Jurassic World Chaos Theory line (which was like a filler line until the Rebirth toys released in the summer).

Review: Ceratosuchops (Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Wild Roar by Mattel)

Described in 2021, Ceratosuchops is an early Cretaceous spinosaur known from the UK’s Wessex Formation. It’s only known from some fragmentary bits of skull, including a nearly complete braincase, and some tail vertebrae. Despite these scant remains two toys now exist of this genus, one from CollectA and another from Mattel.

For a very long time, LEGO dinosaur collectors have lemented the lack of a Spinosaurus. That is, before the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth. However, many of them are not aware, (or rather, choose to forget) that LEGO has actually produced not one, but three Spinosaurus, and the first two were both released in 2001.

Dawn breaks across the Egyptian marsh. Rays of sunlight begin piercing the treeline, and Ramses stirs as the warmth of the rays tickle the arch of his sail, working their way down his flanks. His six-foot long, toothy jaws open wide in a yawn, and he begins stretching his muscles, readying his body for a new day of activity.

My thanks goes to the good folks at Happy Hen Toys for providing a review sample for this review. Despite its history and the significance of its discovery, I never had much Baryonyx in my collection growing up. Although Baryonyx has had a presence in the toy market since the late 1980s, for a long time that presence seemed pretty sparse.

With the influx of Spinosaurus toys from Mattel following the species’ reintroduction to the silver screen in Jurassic World: Rebirth it’s hard to keep track of all the bits and pieces produced of the T.

The next critter in our overview of Wing Crown’s 7 inch ‘Cartoon Series’ is, as I’m sure you can tell from the photos, Spinosaurus. Not Dimetrodon, or ArizonasaurusSpinosaurus.

Before we begin the review, I would like to thank the generous folks over at ToyMonster, for sending me this figure to share with the blog.

With the second season of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory having just dropped it seemed like a good time to share one of the show’s starring theropods, the Suchomimus.

Last year was an exciting year for Irritator! Not only did we get two new figures by Mattel, but we also got a new study looking at the jaw articulation of Professor Challenger’s Irritating creature from Brazil! Join me, Emperor Dinobot, as we look at one of the most interesting figures Mattel has given us thus so far, barring the lack of accuracy and focusing on the artistic license given to this swampy animal!
