I thought I’d review something a little different for a change. As a kid I was fascinated by the original Monster in my Pocket and managed to collect them all. After the first couple of series the lines started to go downhill though and I eventually lost interest. A repulsive line of MIMP dinosaurs was eventually released, but even that didn’t impress – I’ll spare you from such horrors here. Instead, I’ll cast my eyes briefly over the only dinosaur in the original set – the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex!
This strapping muscle-bound T. rex with its well-defined ‘pecs’ and clenched fists is…monstrous, fittingly enough. It looks almost nothing like a Tyrannosaurus, but I won’t waste my time going into the reasons why, as I could be here for hours. There is one notable accuracy, the number of digits is spot on as each foot has just two little claws…no, wait a minute. Impressively the model balances perfectly on two feet, striding purposefully forward, perhaps looking for a Triceratops to beat up.
The squishy rubber figure has some nice details, some fleshy lips and a covering of course scales. The flattened face and stubby tail make the figure look almost humanoid. He (or she?) has a small raised boss on its rump, with the number 25 engraved upon it. Each Monster in my Pocket had a value of points from 5 to 25 and the T.rex was one of the most powerful of all monsters, naturally.
I can’t say I’d like to see more chest-beating dinosaur figures like these and even as a young’un it was quite obvious that this figure was merely a cliched representation of a pop-cultural icon. Perhaps this review would be more appropriate on a site like the fascinating Plasticosauria, but at the very least it is a bit of fun and demonstrates just how diverse the world of dinosaur toys is.

AWWW MANNNNN I totally wanted to review this one but wasn’t sure if it would really count or not! Dang. Well now I’m def gonna do the Loch Ness Monster MIMP.
I had a ton of Monsters in my Pocket toys, including an exclusive set of three that I got in the mail for sending in like ten box-tops from Kraft mac ‘n’ cheese. I don’t know what happened to them all. I wish I still had them, because they were pretty awesome. You’re right–the series started to go downhill once the larger, multicolored monsters were introduced. I had a purple T.rex, and he was one of my favorites.
