In spite of their fame and importance to biostratigraphy, trilobites rarely ever get models made of them, outside of toobs and box sets with other Palaeozoic creatures. This year it seems CollectA is tackling the common creatures of the past that rarely get figures. And even better, they actually named their species: Redlichia rex.
Redlichia rex is a large member of the Redlichia genus found in the Emu Bay lagerstatten of Australia, dating to the Cambrian era. It reached 12″ in length, making it a titan of it’s era, hence the species name of rex. The lagerstatten preserves soft tissues, meaning the specimens are very well preserved with a lot of details. Here is the rendition as produced by CollectA.
Most trilobite figures are small, so this is rightly large, measuring 3.8″ long and 2.4″ wide, so nearly a third of it’s size. The colours are a mix of greyish brown and reds, which may not be the most colourful but it works for a large trilobite. Like the Bullyland rendition, the pose is stationary, but the figure is such a beauty it doesn’t matter. The underside and legs are well detailed, but the CollectA stamp on the underside is a tad distracting.
Accuracy is fantastic here, but given the level of preservation available and this being a modern CollectA figure, it should be. All the details, from cephalon shape to legs and eyes are here, and they look fantastic. Not much more to say on that.
This is a beauty and a rarity, as the only other ones to do figures like this, the ammonite and belemnite was Bullyland, and those are long since discontinued and hard to find. This was a brilliant move by CollectA and I dare say collectors will eat it up. It’s gorgeous and worth getting. A lot of retailers online have it and it will start to become more common over the coming weeks, so pick it up, you won’t regret it.

Very impressive sculpting detail on the underside! Haven’t picked up this toy yet, but definitely plan to!
I wish that CollectA would make their branding stamp a bit less obvious on their models in general. It can be very obvious on their bipedal dinosaurs too! But full marks to the firm for giving us a trilobite (and a named one at that rather than a generic trilobite).
