In the Devonian period, the largest animals were arthrodires, huge armored fish informally referred to as placoderms. ‘Arthrodire’ means “joint-necked,” referring to the fact that there was a hinge in their armor between the thorax and the back of the head.

As the enemy approaches, the gladiator swings his heavy club from side to side, stamps his foot, and growls defiantly. The tyrannosaur is huge and hungry, but the gladiator has fought many battles and sent many would-be killers limping away bloody and broken.

Since its description in 2001, fans of the Madagascan abelisauroid known as Masiakasaurus have longed for an affordable yet accurate model of this obscure beast but no one would deliver, not even CollectA despite all their obscure critters. Now, 15 years later, we finally have one and who better to sculpt it than Paleo-artist Doug Watson for the Wild Safari collection.

Primeval was a show on ITV a few years back that was known for having atrociously shrink-wrapped dinosaurs and that weirdly tusked Kaprosuchus. While it did have some truly horrific dinosaurs, the best of the show’s creatures were the original ones, such as the terrifying super-evolved bat, the future predator, and this guy.

When I first discovered the Dinosaur Toy Blog, I began with browsing the several dinosaur toy producing companies listed. The Kaiyodo site woke my interest, mainly because of the intriguing color schemes and accuracy of their models.

Last year saw the release of CollectA’s Guidraco, a towering 1:4 scale model that stands nearly a foot tall. But CollectA was not the only company to release a pterosaur in 2015; Papo also released a pterosaur that was perhaps overshadowed by the Guidraco.

Having appeared in the film The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Mamenchisaurus is commonly known as the dinosaur with the longest neck. While this may not have been true due to fossils which have yet to be discovered or named, the Mamenchisaurus by Safari LTD has an enormously long neck compared to its body.

Ah, a classic, monochrome tail dragging sauropod figure! Ah, a replica of a classic behemoth, exclusively released in one theme park in a single region! Ah, a legacy from those times when dinosaurs were regarded at as strange, clumsy foreign bodies.

There are many wonderful paintings by Charles Knight, one in particular has a Apatosaurus in the fore-ground, with its head and neck rising out of the swampy water. It looks big and clumsy. In the back ground, grazing on the shore of this prehistoric swamp, there is a Diplodocus, painted in a boring grey color.

It lived during the Late Jurassic (middle Kimmeridgian, about 154 million years ago) of northern Germany, and has been identified as an example of insular dwarfism resulting from the isolation of a sauropod population on an island within the Lower Saxony basin.

Rounding out my electronic Chap Mei toys is that scrappy (and in this case, rather scary) thick-headed lizard, Pachycephalosaurus!
This rather dubious-looking dinosaur measures 25 cm long and stands 17 cm tall when hunched over. The main colours are light brown and dark brown with beige accents, electric blue stripes, white teeth, and translucent orange for the eyes and the cranium.
