They’re here! They’re finally here! The long awaited line of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom figures by Mattel! Ever since the first pictures to emerge, fans of the franchise and of the toys have been touting them as “better” than Hasbro’s much criticized line of JW dinosaur figures.

Review: Baryonyx (Schleich)

1.8 (19 votes)

If this figure looks familiar that’s because it was reviewed here before! The original review of the Schleich Baryonyx was one of several interesting reviews here by former dinosaur toy blogger Tomhetleere. Sadly, Tomhet left the Dinosaur Toy Blog earlier this year and, to everyone’s dismay, removed his valuable dinotoyblog contributions on his departure.

Review: Baryonyx (The Lost World: Jurassic Park by Kenner)

2.8 (13 votes)
In the world of toy dinosaurs few have suffered like the Baryonyx. Despite repeated attempts to fashion a model of this spinosaurid, only one can be said to have been successful and it was the first ever produced, the Invicta 1989 figure. Since then numerous attempts have been made and most have failed.

Review: Baryonyx (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd.)

Before Spinosaurus was all the rage, and before we even had a good grasp of what Spinosauridae was as a family, Baryonyx was the bizarre piscivorous theropod that was capturing the public imagination. In much the same way modern companies try to keep up with new discoveries, Invicta Plastics was able to produce a Baryonyx in 1989, only 3 years after it was fromally described.

“Hello, fellow dinosaur lovers. Dr. Bella Bricking here, along with Beth Buildit. The holiday season has arrived once again and needless to say, we are very happy and thankful to be back here on the Dinosaur Toy Blog.”

“It’s been one heckuva lousy year, hasn’t it, Doc?”

“It certainly has been a most difficult and trying one, my dear Beth.

Review: Ceratosuchops (CollectA)

4.3 (52 votes)

For many years, the only described spinosaur from the United Kingdom was the famous baryonychine Baryonyx. That finally changed in 2021 with the announcement of two additional species: Riparovenator milnerae and Ceratosuchops inferdios. Both were discovered in the Wessex Formation on the Isle of Wight, both are estimated to have been around 8.5 metres in length, and both have been determined to be more closely related to Suchomimus than Baryonyx.

Review: Dinosaurs III (Authentics Habitat Collection by Safari ltd.)

3.9 (13 votes)

The final set of Safari’s first forays into dinosaur miniatures features a charming blend of aesthetics, and also serves in retrospect as a tribute to a dawning hobby and its burgeoning artists.

In 1994, Battat was commissioned by the Boston Museum to produce what would become one of the most praised toy lines in dinosaur collecting.

Review: Ichthyovenator (CollectA)

3.6 (14 votes)
Described in 2012, Ichthyovenator is the first definitive spinosaurid to be discovered in Southeast Asia. Its name means, appropriately, ‘fish hunter.’ Even for a spinosaurid, it was particularly weird-looking due to the fact that it had not one, but two sails on its back.

CollectA’s 2014 Ichthyovenator measures 18 cm long.

Review: Irritator (CollectA)

3.3 (12 votes)
Nope, that’s not a spelling error or practical joke. There really is a dinosaur named “Irritator”. The Irritator was named as such because, as it passed through the unscrupulous hands of commercial fossil markets, many modifications were made to the original fossil in order to make it appear more desirable.

Review: Irritator (Dino Hazard)

Brazilian paleontologist Tito Aureliano published the time-travel dinosaur adventure novel Dino Hazard: Realidade Oculta (English subtitle: Hidden Reality) in 2015, and since then he and a team including other paleontologists and artists have been spinning off paleo-themed merchandise and media, including a video game.

Review: Irritator (Jurassic World Sound Strike by Mattel)

2.5 (11 votes)

As it stands there is only one review for Irritator on the blog, Irritator being an early Cretaceous spinosaurid from Brazil. That toy is by CollectA and it’s pushing a decade old and quite clearly “early CollectA” in terms of quality. There are a few other Irritator out there but none that are as accessible or as mass produced as that one.

Review: Jurassic World Dominion Minis part 1 (Jurassic World by Mattel)

3.7 (12 votes)

The Jurassic Park/World has had it’s fair share of miniature dino models, from the original metal ones to hard plastic. Now Jurassic World Dominion brings hard (ish) rubber, safer for siblings, and we see one and two packs of minis, giving plenty of material to review. But how to cover them?

Review: Mini-Dino Multi-Pack (“Battle Damage”)(Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom by Mattel)

4.2 (10 votes)
Review and photographs by Cretaceous Crab, edited by Suspsy
Let me start out by saying that this pack of figures are obviously part of the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World toy franchise, and likewise, each figure is designed to be a representation of its silver screen counterpart. We all know that many of the prehistoric species featured in this franchise are not scientifically accurate.

Review: Six little dinosaurs (Tyrannosaurus, Mamenchisaurus, Amargasaurus, Ankylosaurus, Spinosaurus, Triceratops) (PNSO)

3.8 (16 votes)
Enter the PNSO! I first became aware of The Peking Natural Science-Art Organisation in March 2016, when I visited their offices and workshop in Beijing on a work-related business trip. It was with great excitement that I discovered this blossoming company has its sights set not only on literature and 2D palaeoart (my expectation going in), but also on commercially available 3D art as well: dinosaur toys.
