We take a different path today, not down a path of dinosaurs, but a dinosaur/robot. On September 17, 1984, lightning struck as one of the most popular children’s cartoon shows of all time debuted: The Transformers. 12 years later, a different path was taken with Beast Wars, where the Autobots became Maximals, and the Decepticons became Predacons.

Tyrannosaurus rex (CamoXtreme series, Arctic version, Jurassic Park 3, by Hasbro)

All this buzz over the next instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise, officially now in production under the title of ‘Jurassic World’ and set for a 2015 summer release, has spurred me to take a look back at some of the toys from previous films. And, why not, speculate a little about what the future may hold for Jurassic Park action figures.

Tyrannosaurus Rex (Chomping)(Jurassic World by Hasbro)

When it comes to Jurassic Park, you need to have the king. For the Jurassic World line in 2015 there are three main T-Rex toys. There is the small Basher and Biter, the medium Chomping, and the Large Stomp and Strike. All three look very similar in their basic colors, so there is not much variation, other than their size, and the style of gimmicks they have.

For my first ever post for Dinosaur Toy Blog, I was not sure what to review. But with Jurassic World having recently come out and seeing some great previous reviews of toys in the Jurassic Park series, I eventually decided to start with one of my favourites when I was a child.

Tyrannosaurus Rex (Jurassic World Basher and Biters by Hasbro)

The basher and biter Tyrannosaurus Rex is an important part of the legacy and impact of the Jurassic World toys that came out in 2015. This was the first toy (brown version) that I saw from this line, and for me, it really set the tone for the rest of the series.

Once Universal and Hasbro saw the potential in Jurassic World toys after great sales last year, they decided to bring it back as DINO HYBRIDS! The new line consists of repaints and retooled JW dinosaurs with features such as removable armor, spikes and so forth.

Tyrannosaurus rex (Jurassic World Hero Mashers by Hasbro)

2.2 (11 votes)
Hero Mashers, which consists of buildable action figures with interchangeable parts, is one of Hasbro’s more successful lines. It includes the popular brands Star Wars, Transformers, Marvel Super Heroes, and, beginning in 2015, Jurassic World. Today we’ll be taking a look at one of the largest sets: the Toys R Us exclusive Tyrannosaurus rex.

Upcoming release from Hasbro (New for 2023)

Following up on last year’s Tyrannocon Rex vs JP93 set, Hasbro has revealed a second Jurassic Park-inspired Transformers Collaborative two-pack. Behold the vicious Decepticon Dilophocon vs the mighty (or perhaps not so much) Autobot JP12!

As you can see, Dilophocon transforms from a venom-spitting, frilled Dilophosaurus to a robot warrior armed with a heavy laser blaster.

In the Marvel universe, Zabu is a Smilodon with near-human intelligence who resides with his human companion Ka-Zar in the Savage Land. And this year, Hasbro’s popular Marvel Legends line will be releasing a poseable toy of him that looks pretty impressive indeed!

Acquiring him, however, requires acquiring six different Marvel characters, each of whom comes with a single piece of Zabu.

Velociraptor “Alpha” (Jurassic Park: Dinosaurs by Hasbro)

The closure of Kenner by parent company Hasbro in 2000 meant that an entirely different team would design the toys for Jurassic Park 3. Many dinosaur collectors, including myself, feel that the quality of the line took a major nosedive as a result. As proof, I give you the “Alpha” Velociraptor.

Velociraptor “BLUE” (Jurassic World by Hasbro)

1.5 (11 votes)
Velociraptor is one of the best known dinosaurs in the world, and it owes its popularity to Jurassic Park.  On screen, it is a cunning and deadly foe that is smart, fast, social, and hunts in groups so it can lay traps for its quarry.  In reality, it was small 3ft dinosaur from Mongolia that had feathers.

To coincide with the home media release of Jurassic World (which just came out as of the time of this writing), I decided to collect the “Bashers and Biters” figures that were released back in May 2015.

Velociraptor “Charlie” (Jurassic World by Hasbro)

I know what your thinking, do we need to see another Jurassic World toy review?  Can this toy be any better than its predecessors?  Even though I made up my mind not to review anymore toys from Hasbro’s JW line, for some reason I am compelled to give it another try and go down with the ship.
