Over the years, Papo’s prehistoric creatures have become one of the most popular on the market, mainly due to their immense detailing and outstanding paint applications. However, while Papo boasts excellently crafted figures like the Acrocanthosaurus and Spinosaurus, there are also some figure that are considered ‘stinkers’ in the eyes of the dinosaur toy collecting community.

The end of 2018 is nearing, and with the upcoming 2019 releases of several brands, everybody and their moms and probably cats and dogs is talking about the new Eofauna Giganotosaurus. And while this certainly deserves the attention, let’s not forget the already existing models of that enigmatic predator not being reviewed yet.

One of the best things about the Mattel Jurassic World line is its inclusion of many obscure and unpopular genera. This was something Kenner did with the original line too, producing such oddities as Esstemenosuchus and Scutosaurus. For the Mattel line a lot of unexpected surprises have already hit the shelves or are slated for release.

Tyrannosaurus rex, the tyrant lizard king, last of a long and mighty dynasty. It doesn’t matter your level of dinosaur expertise, everyone knows what a T. rex is. Compared to the other great theropods it wasn’t the largest, or even that unique, but it’s been a pop culture icon for over a century.

Back in the day, most producers of prehistoric fauna in plastic would have included a couple of mammals among their dinosaurs, the usual suspects being the mammoth and the sabretooth. Good to see that has changed over the years, with all manner of ancient mammals getting a look in, but there’s still not a lot of attention given to the cave bear.

Here is an interesting fact. In the United States of America, the release of the limited edition Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Kinder Joy Eggs would have been illegal if it had been released in previous years. The reason for this is that any candy with a toy or “non-nutritive object embedded” inside it has been illegal since 1938, when the U.S.

In 1972 the Dry Mesa Quarry in Colorado relvealed an enormous scapula to the paleontologist James A. Jensen. Official description took its time and was published more than a decade later in 1985. While not undisputed over time, Supersaurus is currently accepted as a sovereign diplodocid species growing to tremendous size.

As a huge fan of ornithopods I was delighted when Papo unveiled my favourite of all for their 2018 collection, the Iguanodon. One of my happiest experiences was standing in awe of the skeletal mount in the NHM and marvelling at the sheer presence and size of this creature.
