Where reviews of new toys are concerned this 2012 release has somehow gone neglected. Now, amidst the flurry of reviews for newer models I’m writing one for this little guy. I’m writing of course about the Safari 2012 Dracorex, one of a stellar lineup of toys released last year and the only one from that lineup that has yet to be reviewed.

Review: Diabloceratops (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd.)

Safari’s take on the sinisterly horned ceratopsian from Utah is the second Diabloceratops figure of 2013, following Collecta’s pretty decent effort a few months prior. While it can be a bit dull when companies rush to produce figures of the same animal, they’re quite welcome to as long as we get toys of this calibre.

Here we have another new release from Safari Ltd for 2013, the long-necked Elasmosaurus. I lent a small helping hand with the design of this figure, as I had done previously with Safari Ltd’s other recent plesiosaurian offering (Liopleurodon).

Call me strange, but this is really my favorite new release for 2013. Only Safari Ltd. has the stones to tackle the often-overlooked hadrosaurine (or saurolophine, if you’re keeping up with the times) dinosaurs, with an excellent Edmontosaurus replica being foremost in recent memory.

Review: Gastornis (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd.)

Perhaps surprisingly for an animal that was a staple of popular books on prehistoric life for decades (and made an appearance in Walking With Beasts), models of Gastornis are a little thin on the ground. Happily, Safari have stepped forward with this very decent effort – the first toy “Diatryma” in years.

News: Upcoming releases from Safari Ltd (New for 2013)

Although it’s only September, Safari Ltd have already provided information on the new figures they plan to release in 2013. The line up of prehistoric animals includes one new addition to the Carnegie Collection, several new critters in the Wild Safari line, and a new ‘toob’.

Safari have really performed excellently with the Wild Safari line this year. While their bipeds have attracted criticism from some quarters for having oversized feet (the Ceratosaurus being particularly irksome in this respect), it’s clear that the production values have really been ramped up – maybe even (whisper it) to Papo standards.

Ceratosaurus is the other new Wild Safari theropod for 2012. Unlike Acrocanthosaurus, which is a brand new addition to the range, this Ceratosaurus replaces an older, now retired sculpt that was actually one of the best of the ‘old wave’ Wild Safari dinosaur toys.

Safari are first out of the gate this year with no fewer than four new-for-2012 Wild Safari dinosaurs already available. This Acrocanthosaurus is one of them, and it’s easy to see it becoming the most popular of the bunch – not just because it’s a fearsome-looking, spectacular theropod, but also thanks to Safari capturing that so well in an excellent sculpt.

A number of dinosaurs in the Wild Safari line have been subject to resculpts, but the most famous dinosaur of all is unique in having been revised twice. The iffy original was replaced by an abysmal Jurassic Park-esque affair back in 2006; it was almost reminiscent of the Papo T.

Recently described in 2009, Kaprosuchus is one of the latest additions to the extensive and continuously growing roster of known toothy prehistoric devilry. And that means nothing but good things for us paleo toy fans! With a name which aptly translates to “boar crocodile” (for obvious reasons), the 20 foot Kaprosuchus was an interesting terrestrial crocodyliform from Cretaceous Africa.
