Just as the Carnegie collection’s 10 year milestone was celebrated with the release of an updated Tyrannosaurus sculpt, so this year’s 25th anniversary sees the release of an all-new T. rex figure, one better suited to the line’s current aesthetic. This latest generation T.

With Wild Safari having released an absolutely stellar assortment for 2017, I thought it would be both amusing and humbling to take a trip back in time to when the line was widely perceived as being strictly for kids and inferior to the now-defunct Carnegie Collection. Behold, I present these two outdated Tyrannosaurus rex figures.

Everyone knows about the now-defunct Carnegie Collection, which was a collaboration between Safari Ltd and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. As far as I know, this was one of the longest running museum lines, with a lifespan of over 27 years, before being cancelled due to disagreement between the two entities.

As an illustration of how far the Carnegie line has advanced in 20 years, you can’t do much better than the original Tyrannosaurus. Many people in their early 20s will remember owning one of these as a child. They’ll probably also remember it gathering dust in a dark corner of the cupboard under the stairs when the Jurassic Park toyline came along and made everything else seem a bit rubbish.

There was once a time when no proper museum gift shop didn’t feature the legendary and now-defunct Carnegie Collection. Let us take a closer look at one of its biggest stars.

Here we have the second version of the Carnegie Tyrannosaurus rex, released in 1996.

Review: Tyrannosaurus rex (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd. – 2011 sculpt)

A number of dinosaurs in the Wild Safari line have been subject to resculpts, but the most famous dinosaur of all is unique in having been revised twice. The iffy original was replaced by an abysmal Jurassic Park-esque affair back in 2006; it was almost reminiscent of the Papo T.

Review: Uintatherium (Wild Safari Prehistoric World, by Safari Ltd.)

Uintatherium was among the largest land animals in one of the stranger groups of large mammals that lived during the Eocene. Its flat and strongly built skull is quite the trophy as it is strange and bizarre.  The skull is adorned with six long paired knobs that protruded from its nose, forehead, and from the back of its head.

Although it’s only September, Safari Ltd have already provided information on the new figures they plan to release in 2013. The line up of prehistoric animals includes one new addition to the Carnegie Collection, several new critters in the Wild Safari line, and a new ‘toob’. Presumably information about the new releases from CollectA, Papo, and Bullyland will follow shortly.
