If ever there was a dinosaur in need of a public relations team, it’s Velociraptor. It seems no matter how far we march into the feathery future, the poor protobird still seems to have one sickle-clawed toe in the past, and this is particularly evident in the area of toys and collectibles.

I’m really happy that Recur exists and is making toy dinosaurs. I’m a big fan of CollectA and Safari Ltd., but I realize that they are cost prohibitive to a lot of collectors, and while I enjoy cheap knockoff toys (I don’t care for the term “Chinasaur”), part of me always hesitates to give them to kids, knowing that the original toy they got the design from is probably 70 years old, and was scientifically inaccurate then.

Today we (or I should say, I) celebrate a small milestone in my personal “career” here on the DTB. For on this day we’re looking at the very last figure in the Dakin line of “Jurassic Park” toys issued in 1992. And although I am not a completest by any means the acquisition of this toy has completed my collection of these vintage oddities.

Ah, the Jurassic Park Velociraptor – you have a lot to answer for. Unfortunately you made such a lasting childhood impression for a lot of people that when it was revealed that Velociraptor, their favouritest dinosaur, was actually feathered, many of those people simply refused to accept it.

There will be no unboxing for this one because she arrived in a nondescript white box, housing her in styrofoam packaging which was neat, tight, and kept her perfectly safe.

I must confess. Although I credit Jurassic Park with introducing me to the magnificent group known as dromaeosaurs, and the very concept that birds evolved from dinosaurs, I have grown mighty weary of scaly raptors. Jurassic Park is almost 30 years old now and although the scientific image of Velociraptor and its kin has changed dramatically in that time, the pop culture image of it has remained frustratingly unchanged.

Among my earliest memories were my first viewings of Jurassic Park. I was probably only four or five years old when I first watched it, but it quickly became one of my favorite movies from then on, and also helped to inspire my love for dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.

Thanks to my handy clicker-counter and the DinoToyCollector website I was able to tally up 114 Velociraptor toys by Mattel. This includes various repaints, repacks, and toys outside the mainline but not the minis (I forgot them). It’s a rough estimate but it still gives you an idea of how many raptors Mattel has put out there.
