Review: Mononykus (Jurassic World Dino-Escape, Wild Pack by Mattel)

[In a rare twist of fate, the toy I wrote about for this review was simultaneously being reviewed by someone else. Since I had already finished writing this review and taking its pictures, and because I worked hard on it, I’m posting it anyway. I think it’s an enjoyable read, and I think you’ll like it, but I apologize that the same toy has now been reviewed twice.]

This past spring dinosaur fans rejoiced with the premier of Prehistoric Planet, the 5-part Planet Earth styled documentary about life during the late Cretaceous that gave us the best looking and most accurate dinosaurs ever put to screen.

If there’s one group of dinosaurs that have never before graced a child’s toy box then it would almost certainly be the alvarezsaurids. Alvarezsaurids are small, maniraptoran dinosaurs whose fossils were found in North and South America, as well as Asia. These dinosaurs had long legs and necks, and were probably feathered, but the main characteristic that sets most of these particular dinosaurs apart, is their insanely tiny arms, which end in a single clawed digit.

More and more species of dinosaurs are discovered almost weekly and that pace easily outruns the capacity for toy companies to release new figures. That’s however not the only reason why some species probably will never find their way into kid’s rooms or even collectors’ shelves. Some if not most of them are simply not as awe inspiring or mighty as others.

Review: Mononykus with Desert Environment Accessory Pack (Beasts of the Mesozoic: Raptor Series by Creative Beast Studio)

David Silva, the sculptor behind the Creative Beast line of model kits, ran a Kickstarter campaign in April 2016 to produce the Beasts of the Mesozoic “Raptor” Series, a range of large-scale dromaeosaurid action figures that he strove to make accurate, detailed, and posable. The campaign ended in May 2016 with a prodigious fundraising total and a much larger scope than first anticipated.
