During the Middle and Late Jurassic, the largest predatory dinosaur in China was the fearsome metriacanthosaurid Yangchuanosaurus. Indeed, it is one of China’s most famous and popular dinosaurs, reflected by the fact that PNSO has made no less than four toys of it.

Concavenator is a genus of carcharodontosaurian that hails from Spain and was described in 2010, the same year I started collecting dinosaurs! Although only known from a single specimen it’s a nearly complete and articulated one. Concavenator is immediately recognizable thanks to two tall vertebrae in front of the hips that are thought to have supported a hump.

Carcharodontosaurid-heads have had a lot to celebrate since PNSO hit the scene. The company has produced 6 members of the clade and most of them within the last couple of years. This has allowed fans of these mega theropods to amass a high-end collection of all the clade’s major players, and unlike other dinosaur groups, PNSO has given each an attractive and visually distinct paintjob.

Mapusaurus is a carcharodontosaurid that lived in Argentina during the late Cretaceous and is also one of the largest theropods known. It was only slightly smaller than its close relative, Giganotosaurus, and the skeletal differences between them are minimal.

Leave it to the Jurassic World franchise to once again thrust an exceptionally fragmentary dinosaur into the limelight and give it the wrong name in the process. Becklespinax is one of many synonyms for the early Cretaceous English theropod now known as Altispinax.

Opinions about Jurassic World: Dominion and its Giganotosaurus design aside, if you wanted a decent action figure of this animal upon the film’s release, you were SOL. Mattel only released one Giganotosaurus in the mainline and although it had some cool action features it resembled the animal in the movie about as much as the movie animal resembled the real Giganotosaurus.

With 47 votes the PNSO Saurophaganax is poised to win the prestigious title of figure of the year on the Dinosaur Toy Forum’s Top 10 of 2023 poll. And rightly so, it’s a fantastic figure. One of the best theropod models I’ve ever seen, and quite possibly the best “Allosaurus” ever.

The release of genera such as Metriacanthosaurus, Concavenator, and Irritator in the Hammond Collection line was initially met with controversy. Some collectors were excited to see non-canonical dinosaurs join the prestigious Hammond Collection while others were dismayed, hoping the dinosaurs seen in the films would be given priority.
