Last year’s Papo releases were rather mixed in terms of quality – while they all displayed the usual high production standards, only the Pachyrhinosaurus was truly great, the Oviraptor emerging as a scaly basketball player and the Plesiosaurus as a Nessie aberration.

If you’d ask a random person to name a theropod, most would probably be puzzled and not be able to come up with an answer, though anyone who have ever heard of dinosaurs could at least come up with one name: T. rex. The more enthusiast dinosaur fans could easily name some more, like Allosaurus, Carnotaurus, Velociraptor or Giganotosaurus.

Like their archenemies the tyrannosaurs, ceratopsids were probably devoted caregivers to their young. This year, Papo’s prehistoric assortment became a little larger with the addition of this adorable baby Triceratops.

Like its parent, this baby was clearly inspired by the Jurassic Park series.

In my previous review of Papo’s Parasaurolophus, I pointed out that not all Papo’s pre-Allosaurus dinosaur figures were necessarily Jurassic Park copies – but this Triceratops definitely is. It will therefore be more appealing to JP fans than anyone else, but like all Papo figures it’s quite a nice piece in its own right.

Last year saw the release of CollectA’s Guidraco, a towering 1:4 scale model that stands nearly a foot tall. But CollectA was not the only company to release a pterosaur in 2015; Papo also released a pterosaur that was perhaps overshadowed by the Guidraco.

Like it or not, Papo have created their first mosasaur and to cut to the chase: it’s a downright failure.

This year’s really all about Tyrannosaurus as far as Papo are concerned, with two brand new sculpts and a repaint/refinement of their original Jurassic Park knock-off. Sure, there’s also that tantalising brachiosaur, but that’s not out yet – and I think we’ll all agree that we’re better off pretending that any disastrous attempts at marine reptiles didn’t happen.

Papo has produced some stunning, if inaccurate, toys in their short time in the model dinosaur industry. Today I will be reviewing one of their larger pieces, the Tyrannosaurus rex. I apologize in advance to Jurassic Park worshipers for bashing their little Rex, I don’t hate him, I am just a bit critical.

Since its release in 2012, Papo’s Running Tyrannosaurus rex has become immensely popular with dinosaur enthusiasts. Its fearsome visage has popped in multiple books and magazines, and it has even crashed a few weddings! Not surprisingly then, Papo released this very colourful repaint in mid-2016. Unlike the super-rare brown variant, this one is widely available both online and in certain stores such as Mastermind Toys here in Ontario.

So – and forgive me if you’ve heard this already – Papo have a new T. rex out for 2012. And now, finally, we’ve all got the chance to get our greasy paws on one. Although most of you probably decided a long time ago whether or not you were going to grab one of these, hopefully this review will be useful for the very few still sitting on the fence…

There’s one thing always worth remembering about Papo – they’ve never claimed any sort of scientific authority or authenticity.

Depending on how you look at it, repaints are either a blessing or a curse. On the one hand, it can be annoying to plunk down hard-earned money on a sculpt you already own. On the other hand, there’s a lot to be said for a radical new colour scheme that spruces up a familiar toy.

Up until about a week or so ago I was intending to lump the modest parade of new 2012 figures by Safari Ltd, Papo, and other non-CollectA companies, into a single post. That was before the slow trickle of anticipated 2012 releases from these companies swelled to a veritable torrent , almost, but not quite, matching the army of figures CollectA has in store for us next year.

This is little more than a formality at this stage as most readers will already be aware of Papo’s new dinosaurian additions for 2014. However, it doesn’t hurt to quickly recap what we have in store this year. Papo will produce three new standard figures for 2014 as well as a set of six miniature figures.

Papo’s 2023 prehistoric assortment includes a pair of new dinosaurs.

Also slated for release are these two impressive-looking sea reptiles, which were originally supposed to come out this year.

These previously retired figures will be re-released.

For 2024, Papo will be releasing three new dinosaurs. First we have the armoured French titanosaur Ampelosaurus. Looks like one of Papo’s better sauropods, although the colour scheme is nearly identical to that of the CollectA version.

Second up is Corythosaurus, the famous helmeted hadrosaur.
