Madagascar has always been an island of oddities. From giant lemurs to horned crocodiles, there are a lot of interesting species to see. The Mesozoic likewise has some interesting animals, such as the late Cretaceous Madagascan monster Majungasaurus, an Abelisaurid known for being cannibalistic.

The 24 foot Ouranosaurus was an interesting ornithopod from Early Cretaceous Africa, where it coexisted with the fish-eating theropod Suchomimus. Its name means “brave lizard”, and some distinguishing traits of Ouranosaurus were its thumb spikes and the elongated neural spines of its back. It was once assumed that these spines supported a skin sail, but their robust form makes it seem more likely that they were for muscle attachment or supported a hump similar to a camel’s.

Parasaurolophus is a well known lambeosaurine dinosaur from Late Cretaceous North America, where it lived near the Western Interior Seaway. It sported a large crest on its skull which may have been used for making vocalizations and has caused this genus to be easily recognizable to the public.

Pentaceratops, an obscure species of ceratopsian dinosaur. It’s a species that’s not often reproduced in toy form, but it has been done a few times before. For Schleich, it’s a first ever, and whilst Schleich is infamous for their often horrible lack of scientific accuracy, I consider this Pentaceratops a glimmer of hope.

The large Late Triassic dinosaur Plateosaurus was a member of the prosauropods, a group of dinosaurs that would give rise to the giants of the Late Jurassic, like Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus, 50 million years later. Plateosaurus averaged around 25 feet in length. The name means “broad lizard”, and Plateosaurus was one of the earliest dinosaurs to be discovered.

Today’s review is a 2020 Schleich figure that I knew about since 2016. The animal is Plesiosaurus, a long-necked predator that lends its name to a whole Order of marine reptiles that lived from the Early Jurassic all the way up to the Late Cretaceous.

In early 2018 Schleich introduced several new models for the year, including a new Psittacosaurus. The model appears to be P. Sibiricus, and is surprisingly well done. Measuring in at just under 5 inches and over 2 inches tall at its highest point, it is a decent sized model.

Long time collectors may remember Schleich’s first Pteranodon, part of the Replica Saurus line back in 2001. It was an elegant creature, beautifully sculpted, and still pleasing to the modern collector’s eye. In 2018, almost two decades later, Schleich released a new version as part of the Conquering the Earth line.
