Review: Slender Bush Wren (Forgotten Friends Series A by Yowie)

Genus: Brand: Classification:

3.8 (8 votes)

Songbirds are all around us today. So common, that it is hard to believe that any could become extinct. Of course, this is far from the case, as no species lasts forever. Here, we see the Bushwren, a near flightless species found in each of the major islands of New Zealand and many of the smaller islands.

Review: Steller’s Sea Cow (Forgotten Friends Series A by Yowie)

The order sirenia has long been fascinating to me, the main herbivorous marine mammals that have survived throughout the Cenozoic. The one that interests me the most (even inspiring my ATB name Sirenia) is, unfortunately, no longer living, the Steller’s Sea Cow. These giant sirenians lived around Commander Island in the Bering sea, being hunted by locals.

The Mesozoic saw the rise of the dinosaurs to dominance, as they were the largest and most successful animals around. But naturally, they weren’t the only creatures around, as this era saw the rise of birds and mammals. They were often small, especially during the Jurassic period, but they set the stage for their eventual take over once the dinosaurs bit the dust.

When most will think of extinct animals on the islands of Tasmania, they will think of the Thylacine. While it is very famous, there are, of course, many other extinct creatures that are worthy of note. One such example is Tasmaniosaurus, one of the most complete Triassic reptiles found in Australia.

Review: Tingamarra Soft-Shelled Turtle (Lost Kingdoms Series A by Yowie)

Genus: Brand: , Classification: Age: Type:

3.5 (4 votes)

I adore lines like Yowie for bringing out models of animals that are comparatively rare in terms of being immortalised in plastic. Animals from the Paleogene and Eocene are rare. Extinct turtle species are rare. And yet Yowie made a figure of an animal that fits both criteria, the Tingamarra Soft-Shelled Turtle.

Review: Triceratops (Ultimate Dinosaurs by Yowie Group)

Genus: Brand: Classification: , Age: Type:

3 (5 votes)

Although another Triceratops is probably the last thing any of us need in our collections (certainly mine) this one from Yowie Group is decent enough to deserve some time in the spotlight on the Dinosaur Toy Blog. It comes from Yowie Groups Ultimate Dinosaur series which is currently available in various shop across the United States.

Review: Upland Moa (Forgotten Friends Series B by Yowie)

Genus: , Brand: Classification: Age:

When most people think of the Moa, it is likely they will only think about the giants of these birds, specifically the South Island Giant Moa. The reality is, however, that there were many Moa species across New Zealand, filling niches that in other parts of the world are filled by mammals.
