“Hello, fellow dinosaur lovers. Dr. Bella Bricking here, along with Beth Buildit. The holiday season has arrived once again and needless to say, we are very happy and thankful to be back here on the Dinosaur Toy Blog.”

“It’s been one heckuva lousy year, hasn’t it, Doc?”

“It certainly has been a most difficult and trying one, my dear Beth.

Well, after my third Spinosaurus review of figures based on the new reconstruction, I surely thought I was done, at least for a while. But here we are with yet another Spinosaurus review! But today, I am excited to review a brand-new figure that not only reflects the most current reconstruction ( the first one out of the gate so far), but also introduce this brand-new company from China for those of you who may not be aware of its existence.

Review: Irritator (Jurassic World Primal Attack, Sound Strike by Mattel)

2.9 (15 votes)

As it stands there is only one review for Irritator on the blog, Irritator being an early Cretaceous spinosaurid from Brazil. That toy is by CollectA and it’s pushing a decade old and quite clearly “early CollectA” in terms of quality.

One of the most famous dinosaurs from Europe, Baryonyx ( Baryonyx walkeri), has seen its fame continues to rise through the decades, and will continue no doubt. It even made an appearance in the hugely successful Jurassic park franchise, a testament to its fame.

Spinosaurus was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs, probably exceeding Tyrannosaurus rex and Giganotosaurus in length, but not mass. Other factors which have contributed to Spinosaurus‘ fame apart from its huge size are its signature dorsal sail, its well-known (but inaccurate) appearance in the movie Jurassic Park 3, and the many figures of it that were released from different companies in 2019.

Well, after the long wait, and after all of the hype that surrounded it since its announcement, the new Papo Spinosaurus based on the latest reconstruction is finally available to the masses.Surely this figures ranks as one of the most anticipated figure of all time and would probably go  down in history as one of the most polarizing figure.

Baryonyx walkeri is a well known dinosaur in this community so I don’t think it needs an introduction. When it comes to replicas there are more than enough to choose from. However, all of these toys differ in quality, with the best ones either being hard to obtain, or simply out of date.

To me, Baryonyx is the quintessential British dinosaur. Perhaps a more classic taxon like Iguanodon or Megalosaurus really deserves the top spot, but there’s something about Baryonyx that stands out in my mind as inescapably British, and I think this is very likely to do with the fact that, for a long time, the best Baryonyx toy available was the classic monochrome rendition produced by Invicta Plastics for the British Museum.

Review: Spinosaurus (Original Version by CollectA/Procon)

I was first introduced to CollectA (then labeled as the brand Procon) in 2007, when the summer issue of Prehistoric Times mentioned two new waves of dinosaur figures being released by the company. Most of these early figures, like their take on the iconic sail-backed Spinosaurus, bear their own sort of charm, but generally haven’t aged well in the years since.

Wow, I was not planning on reviewing another Spinosaurus so soon, but when I got this figure, I was blown away and I jumped on the opportunity. With so much history included in my last review, I will skip all of that and really focus on this magnificent new Spinosaurus from PNSO.

Greetings dinofans! Since 2019 is shaping up to be the year of the Spinosaurus, I figured it would be a great way to celebrate it by reviewing Safari’s new for 2019 swimming Spinosaurus. The review is longer than I wanted it to be, but with a species that already is one of the most reviewed figure, I wanted to add just a little bit of its history in the toy world.

Over the last few years, and probably earlier, there have been multiple versions of the same species across the annual releases by the various brands. This year (well, mostly 2018), that dubious honour has gone to Baryonyx, being the recipient of figures from Favorite, Mattel, Mojo, and CollectA.
