When you hear the term “living fossil,” one of the first examples you’re likely to think of is the coelacanth. Fossil coelacanths were first described over 160 years ago, and their fossil record spans the Mesozoic, even reaching back to the Devonian. That means coelacanths have been on Earth for more than twice as long as mammals, but there are no fossils known from later than the Cretaceous.

With all that new JP, sorry, JW stuff around, let’s not forget that there’s plenty of retired figures not being reviewed yet. One of these is Bullyland’s Megatherium, released in 1998 and discontinued some years back. Despite representing a quite rare animal in the toy world, it probably wasn’t sold in big numbers, at least when one compares the chances spotting this on ebay or fleamarket sites with some other Bullyland figures as Stegosaurus or Tyrannosaurus.

As promised, here’s the follow up to the recent Bullyland “Belemnit” review, another take of German company Bullyland to prehistoric molluscs. Another, you’d ask? Yes, while most toy companies do not bother with prehistoric molluscs at all or just did so very recently (as Safari, Schleich or CollectA), Bullyland dashed out this, said “Belemnit” and yet another “Ammonit” as early as 1998.

In 1980 José Fernando Bonaparte discovered one of the first sauropods from Argentina, Saltasaurus. Unlike most other Argentinian dinosaurs, Saltasaurus was not discovered in the province of Chubut in the Patagonian centre of Argentina, but as its name suggests in the northwest province of Salta (travellers know the capital Salta as starting point for the colorful landscape of Jujuy).

Normally when toy companies make juvenile dinosaurs, they just take known adult dinosaurs and make a smaller cuter version. Even respectable companies like Safari and CollectA have gone this route in the past. I typically don’t have any interest in these, but a fair number of taxa are known only from infant or juvenile remains.

Should you not mind having the odd mammal or two in your dinosaur collection, you’d probably go for a woolly mammoth and maybe a sabertooth for starters. This toy here is not an essential mammoth in that case; if you rated prehistoric figures in a celebrity style scale we are not talking A-lister here.

In 1978 Franz Gruß, a German sculptor situated in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), began to build life size reconstructions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals in his private garden in Großwelka, Sachsen. The garden was open to the public and soon developed to a tourist attraction.

If you never have heard of Chuanjiesaurus you’re probably not alone. Remains of this sauropod were discovered in 1995 near the village of – you guess it – Chuanjie in the district of Lufeng (where the more popular Lufengosaurus comes from too), Yunnan Province, China.

Uintatherium was among the largest land animals in one of the stranger groups of large mammals that lived during the Eocene. Its flat and strongly built skull is quite the trophy as it is strange and bizarre. The skull is adorned with six long paired knobs that protruded from its nose, forehead, and from the back of its head.

A recent study of a new species of Daspletosaurus concluded that the answer was a negative, but as with virtually all paleontological papers, that conclusion is by no means set in stone.
