Part 2 of Kaiyodo Dinoland Natural History review series
A long time ago, I traveled back in time. Well, not exactly, more like a road trip through time to some of the most scenic and fossil rich place in the America west.In this trip I visited the Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado and Utah.
The Morrison formation of the western United States has provided us with some of the most iconic dinosaur genera ever discovered. Even as new larger or more flamboyant species are discovered and described in this current golden age of paleontology the classics continue to endure in the public eye; Allosaurus and Stegosaurus for example, and the sauropods; Brachiosaurus, Brontosaurus, and Diplodocus among others.
One of the very first ornithopods I ever learned about as a small child was Camptosaurus, a mid-sized member of the iguanodontian clade hailing from Late Jurassic North America. Due to its utter lack of horns, spikes, and armour, it has long been depicted in books and museum displays as “stock fodder,” either fleeing from or being eaten alive by the merciless Allosaurus.
When it comes to tubes of miniatures, or “toobs,” Safari Ltd. remains the undisputed ruler. That said, they haven’t released any new toobs in years, and many of their prehistoric-themed ones are really showing their age. Today we’ll be examining one such example, Carnivorous Dinos, consisting of twelve miniatures representing a veritable Who’s Who of Mesozoic (and one Paleozoic) Meanies.

Back in 1994, Schleich released its now-discontinued Replica-Saurus line of dinosaur figures, which included perhaps the goofiest, ugliest, and most hideous dinosaur figure ever manufactured, their first Ceratosaurus sculpt, in a quadrupedal stance. It was finally retired in 2005.
