Nope, that’s not a spelling error or practical joke. There really is a dinosaur named “Irritator”. The Irritator was named as such because, as it passed through the unscrupulous hands of commercial fossil markets, many modifications were made to the original fossil in order to make it appear more desirable.

If this figure looks familiar that’s because it was reviewed here before! The original review of the Schleich Baryonyx was one of several interesting reviews here by former dinosaur toy blogger Tomhetleere. Sadly, Tomhet left the Dinosaur Toy Blog earlier this year and, to everyone’s dismay, removed his valuable dinotoyblog contributions on his departure.

Wild Republic (or K&M International) have collaborated with the Natural History Museum in London to release a line of small, cheap plastic dinosaur toys with the tagline “When dinosaurs ruled the earth”, which I feel could do with an exclamation mark – mainly because it reminds me of a cheesy old Hammer flick (there was also a little tribute in…that movie).

This model holds a special place for me, being my first museum quality figure, and the one that started off my collecting spree seven years ago. It is a really nice spino model, certainly nicer than the Wild Safari Suchomimus, the Carnegie Baryonyx, or the preceding Carnegie Spinosaur which had that ill fated head of an Allosaurus.

When it comes to dinosaur figures, many collectors favor pieces that possess either high levels of scientific accuracy, or eye-catching aesthetic embellishments. The dinosaurs produced by CollectA (formerly Procon, and Epixx in Europe) are generally lacking in these crucial traits. Their emphasis on obscure species has granted them some distinction in recent years, but their toys still have a long way to go before competing with the highly-detailed Papo figures and the incredibly accurate Safari figures.

The spinosaur Baryonyx was big news when it was unearthed in England in the 1980s, so it’s understandable that Invicta would have wanted to produce their own model of ‘Claws’. This 1989 plain-coloured toy is (sadly) still one of the best spinosaur toys yet produced, in spite of its outdated posture.

Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, the “Egyptian Spine Lizard” is the largest known theropod that ever existed to be known thus far, surpassing Giganotosaurus at both weight and length! The “Spine Lizard” is one lucky dinosaur, it was once found in 1912 and named three years later by Ernst Stromer Von Reichenbach but its remains were destroyed during bombing in World Ward Two.

Suchomimus was a large theropod dinosaur that lived a few million years before one of it’s famous cousins, Spinosaurus. Considering how it’s closely related to such a famous dinosaur, I’m surprised more replicas of this really cool dinosaur haven’t been produced.
