I have never been much of a CollectA fan but I ran across this little guy and was intrigued. It looked a lot better than some of the others CollectA nodosaurs and ankylosaurs that I have seen (Their Polacanthus and Scelidosaurus being the main offenders).

To understand why this apparently unflattering description is a compliment and not a contradiction in terms, we need to review just a little background on Nothronychus and the therizinosaurs – the truly remarkable group of dinosaurs to which Nothronychus belongs.

History: Since this a relatively newly discovered (2000), and described (2010) ceratopsid species, I’ll present some background. If you’re not interested just skip ahead. Utahceratops Gettyiis a large, robust ceratopsian dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period in southern Larmidia which is now approximately Utah in Western North America.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that CollectA has chosen yet another obscure species to join their expanding herd of ceratopsians. Meet Xenoceratops foremostensis – “alien horned-face”. Released as part of CollectA’s 2014 standard-sized figures, this late Cretaceous centrosaurine ceratopsian was first unearthed in 1958, but was just recently described as a new species.

Just recently I came across one of these figures which make a collector´s life so interesting. I was visiting the museum in Korbach with its great Procynosuchus exhibition when I saw this Bullyland Protochirotherium for sale in a cabinet among many other more common Bullyland figures such as their Apatosaurus or Tyrannosaurus.

Ceratopsians are truly fascinating beasts. The first dinosaur I was introduced to as a child, was good ol’ three horns, Triceratops. Back then I used to collect AAA dinosaur toys, which at the time seemed like the best dinosaur toys around.

The approach of 2014 means an exciting new line from each of our favorite prehistoric figure manufacturers. However, there’s an extra surprise this year – the new 2014 line from Safari Ltd. has already arrived! While their offering is impressive as always, I have to say that my most anticipated figure is the Pachyrhinosaurus, and Safari has really delivered on this piece.
