In 2016, a new brand of toys came onto the dinosaur collecting scene, with a huge selection in their Ancient Animals line. Recur, and its parent company Ankyl Toys Co. Ltd., has been around for a while, but only recently have their products have been revealed to the public (presumably for the first time outside of China).

Review: Tyrannosaurus rex (original) (Carnegie Collection by Safari Ltd.)

As an illustration of how far the Carnegie line has advanced in 20 years, you can’t do much better than the original Tyrannosaurus. Many people in their early 20s will remember owning one of these as a child. They’ll probably also remember it gathering dust in a dark corner of the cupboard under the stairs when the Jurassic Park toyline came along and made everything else seem a bit rubbish.

Once upon a time, back in the year 2016, I was in negotiations with Jesus Toledo AKA Jetoar to create a Tyrannosaurus rex for his Paleo-Creatures line, and it was set to test the waters to see how well large figurines would sell in his line.

Papo has produced some stunning, if inaccurate, toys in their short time in the model dinosaur industry. Today I will be reviewing one of their larger pieces, the Tyrannosaurus rex. I apologize in advance to Jurassic Park worshipers for bashing their little Rex, I don’t hate him, I am just a bit critical.

Well, here we are at last, dear friends. After nearly two years of exploring the prehistoric plastic worlds of CollectA, Papo, Safari, Kenner, Lego, Playmobil, and various other companies, we’ve arrived at my 100th review for the Dinosaur Toy Blog! I’ve saved the biggest item in my collection for this very special occasion: the Aurora Prehistoric Scenes Tyrannosaurus rex!

Since its release in 2012, Papo’s Running Tyrannosaurus rex has become immensely popular with dinosaur enthusiasts. Its fearsome visage has popped in multiple books and magazines, and it has even crashed a few weddings! Not surprisingly then, Papo released this very colourful repaint in mid-2016. Unlike the super-rare brown variant, this one is widely available both online and in certain stores such as Mastermind Toys here in Ontario.

Please welcome Recur to the Dinosaur Toy Blog! Started in 2014, this series of prehistoric and modern animal toys is made in China by Shenzen Ankyl Toys Co., Ltd. Their modern animals range from domestic dogs and horses to sharks and whales, while their prehistoric line currently consists of over 30 beasts.

With all the Jurassic World toys being released this year, it was very easy for me to forget about the other brands of dinosaur toys that I do not normally collect. One of these brands is Mojo Fun, and the reason I did not collect their models is simply because they don’t have a great selection of species, and most were pretty old school in posture.

The red Tyrannosaurus differs greatly compared to the Kabaya green T. rex (reviewed here) for three major reasons. One is that it seems to be paying homage to a classical standing posture. Second is the main color scheme which is red – the overall sculpt resembles Diablo, the red Tyrannosaur of Primal Rage, the great Atari Probe video game of the 1990s.

So – and forgive me if you’ve heard this already – Papo have a new T. rex out for 2012. And now, finally, we’ve all got the chance to get our greasy paws on one. Although most of you probably decided a long time ago whether or not you were going to grab one of these, hopefully this review will be useful for the very few still sitting on the fence…
There’s one thing always worth remembering about Papo – they’ve never claimed any sort of scientific authority or authenticity.

Ueno Park is a 113 acre public park in Tokyo. Similar to Balboa Park in San Diego or Central Park in New York City, Ueno Park has several museums and other attractions within its boundaries. In 2017, gashapon company Figure Miyage created a series of figures paying tribute to the eclectic features that can be seen in Ueno Park, including a figure of the Tyrannosaurus skeleton that is displayed in the National Museum of Nature and Science.
