German company Bullyand seem to be slipping off the radar a little bit in recent years but still continue to provide new releases every twelve months for their Museum Line, although in rather small quantities. 2011 saw two new figures released by Bullyland, both resculpts of previously produced species.

Ah, Dimetrodon – where would any dinosaur toy line be without this oddly anachronistic sail-backed pelycosaur? And where would I be if I didn’t drop names that I semi-understand? In similar places, one would imagine. Almost every dino toy company has churned one out, from Carnegie (ugly) to Bullyland to UKRD to Carnegie (better) to Inpro.

Enough has been said about Dimetrodon. Although it is not a dinosaur, it is among the four best-known prehistoric creatures, together with T.rex, Mammoth and “Brontosaurus”. Dimetrodon is a favourite choice of nearly every company. This seems to have a long tradition, since even Marx and Linde in the 50s and 60s released this Permian synapsid as a figure.

Dimetrodon is probably one of the most well known non dinosaur prehistoric creatures of all time. It lived during the early to middle Permian era way before any dinosaur and is actually more closely related to us mammals than it is to other kinds of reptiles.

Lycaenops was a three foot long mammal-like reptile, or Therapsid from Southern Africa during the Late Permian. It’s a distant later relative of the much more famous sail-backed, Dimetrodon. Its name means “Wolf Face” rightfully so due to its canine-like fangs on its upper and lower jaws.

The bear-sized pareiasaur Scutosaurus inhabited the semi-arid Late Permian landscape of Russia, likely being common on floodplains and in similar environs which would have supported in relative abundance what plant life could be found in that region 250 million years ago.

Here we have the Linde Sphenacodon. In May 2009, Tomhet wrote an excellent recension of Marx´ classic Sphenacodon, also writing that “the two others were almost impossible to find”. Well, almost.

Today I want to introduce to you an extraordinary Bullyland figure that is not available that easily: The Procynosuchus from the “Korbacher Spalte” in Germany (“cleft of Korbach”). Also called the “Korbach dachshund”, this ‘mammal-like reptile’ has been found in a cleft where Permian layers outcrop, about 256 million years old.

This figure is not a dinosaur but a very felicitous reconstruction of a plant-eating pelycosaur from the Lower Permian Period. Once again, Bullyland have proved that they are able to create realistic and authentic figures of extinct animals.

I said felicitous because the Bullyland Edaphosaurus is very authentic in many aspects.

The distinctive sail-back ‘mammal-like reptile’ or basal synapsid, has always been a favorite for dinosaur toy companies, even though its certainly no dino. I wrote a very brief blog on this figure back in July 2007 but I have since managed to acquire a figure for myself and can thus indulge you in some of the details.
