Finishing off our reviews of the Field Museum Mold-A-Rama collection is the Stegosaurus. Older original Mold-A-Rama dinosaurs exist as well but they aren’t currently being produced at the Field Museum and the only way to really obtain them is through eBay. It has come to my attention that the Stegosaurus machine was recently removed from the Field Museum so if you don’t already have the Stegosaurus then try to find one on eBay before they become scarce.

I’ve been in the dinosaur collecting hobby for about 14 years now and this hobby has evolved rapidly within that time. In 2010 most collectors were content to just get good models of their favorite genera. Nowadays, a figure of a genus isn’t enough, collectors want dinosaurs identifiable at the species level.

Here is an interesting rendition of the popular, plate covered, thagomizer wielding stegosaurus. HG toys made some interesting looking dinosaurs during the 80’s. For inspiration on this stegosaur they must have looked at turn of the century paleoart. They certainly didn’t reference any dinosaur renaissance ideas into this stegosaurus, as this toy looks squat and sluggish.

Howdy from wonderful, windy Wyoming! Today we’ll take a look at the Honorable Lead Boiler Suit (HLBS) Stegosaurus. Stegosaurus, with the large plates on its back, is probably one of the most recognizable dinosaurs along with Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, and Brontosaurus.

As far as my “knowledge” goes, Horizon was a small model making company of Chinese origin located in California. It ceased production in the late 90`s or early 2000´s and was famous for making high detailed models of movie characters, like Terminator, Robocop, classic monsters or Jurassic Park.

Some dinosaurs have undergone quite radical image changes over the years – sauropods moved out of their swamps and got into shape and theropods went from blundering tail draggers to sleek, deadly (and quite horizontal) predators – some of then even gained feathers. It might be tempting to presume, however, that Stegosaurus has remained much the same – slow, stupid and stacked with plates like a big reptilian dishwasher.

So before we get to the review I would first like to offer an apology, the specimen I have of this toy has really been through the ringer, it’s in dreadful shape. It’s covered in paint rub-offs and is cracking along most of the limbs and tail.

One day while driving to work, I passed a billboard that had Blue on it and saw that it was an advertisement for Jurassic World live Tour. I didn’t know what it was but as my kids are big Jurassic Park/World fans, I decided it might be worth going to.

As you all know by now, The Jurassic World toys by Hasbro were a bust. Speaking personally, I didn’t buy a single Hasbro Jurassic World toy. I wanted to, but they utterly failed to impress. That’s all ancient history now that Mattel holds the Jurassic World license.

In 1978 Franz Gruß, a German sculptor situated in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), began to build life size reconstructions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals in his private garden in Großwelka, Sachsen. The garden was open to the public and soon developed to a tourist attraction.

The Marx Stegosaurus was first released in 1955 as part of Marx’s second wave of dinosaur toys, known as the Medium Mold Group, PL-750. The Marx Stegosaurus is based on the Stegosaurus painted by Rudolph Zallinger in his Age of Reptiles mural at the Yale Peabody Museum.

Despite its immense fame and popularity, there are not very many complete specimens of Stegosaurus. Most of the skeletons you see in museums are actually composites of multiple animals. The most intact one is currently “Sophie,” a young adult that resides in the Natural History Museum in London, U.K.

This is my first review for the Dinosaur Toy Blog. Stegosaurus is among my favorite dinosaurs and I have plenty of Stegosaurus figures/toys (see group photo below). This is why I chose this charming prehistoric plush toy for my first review.
