Protoceratops figures tend not to be very large, most likely to better communicate the real animal’s small size. Breaking with tradition, CollectA has decided to create this figure in 1/6 scale, to go along with their Deluxe Velociraptor.

Dino World was a line of small models similar to Kaiyodo’s Dino Tales. Unlike Dino Tales, these toys are sold by the Japanese candy company Kabaya and came packaged with candy. This review will be looking at #12 of 24 in the series, the hatching Protoceratops

Like Dino Tales figures, this toy is very small.

Dinosaurs can capture the public eye and get into the spot light for many reasons. Maybe they are large and powerful. Maybe they are peculiar. Or perhaps they are so common they inspire legends. Such is the way of the ‘sheep of the Cretaceous’, Protoceratops.

Howdy from wonderful, windy Wyoming! Today we’ll take a look at the Honourable Lead Boiler Suit (HLBS) Protoceratops. This review will be a relatively short review, as there isn’t much to this figure, which was made sometime during the 1990s.

If any of you have been wondering why I’ve been slacking off on reviews lately I have a good excuse, I just don’t have a lot left to review! Almost my entire collection has been reviewed already by myself or others, with minor exception. So in order to review something I’ve had to scrape the bottom of the barrel, literally.

Review: Protoceratops (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Attack Pack by Mattel)

3.1 (12 votes)
One of the best things about the Mattel Jurassic World line is its inclusion of many obscure and unpopular genera. This was something Kenner did with the original line too, producing such oddities as Esstemenosuchus and Scutosaurus. For the Mattel line a lot of unexpected surprises have already hit the shelves or are slated for release.

A sheep sized ceratopsian from Late Cretaceous Mongolia; Protoceratops was one of the earlier ceratopsians. Unlike later ceratopsians, Protoceratops did not have huge nasal or brow horns. However, it was no weakling. Perhaps the most famous Protoceratops fossil is the “Fighting Dinosaurs” specimen. It shows a Protoceratops interlocked with a Velociraptor, engaged in mortal combat.

While some fossil species in the world are rare, known from mere fragments, others are known from multiple specimens. Such is the case with Protoceratops, an early Ceratopsian, so common that it is known as the sheep of the Cretaceous, with multiple species associated with the genus.

I know what you’re all thinking: “Another Protoceratops review by Loon? It must be a day that ends in ‘y’!” This time it’s the one from Starlux, which is around 40 years old.

Being made in the 1970s, it’d be incredibly unfair to judge this figure by modern scientific standards; what kind of idiot would do that?

Protoceratops was a smaller more primitive ceratopsian dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous in what is now Mongolia.  Size wise it is most commonly compared to a sheep and many fossilized specimens of this dinosaur have been discovered from tiny eggs and hatchlings all the way up to full grown adults.
