Toys and figurines representing early hominins and human evolution in general are rare in this hobby. The few that do exist by the likes of Safari, Bullyland, and CollectA are usually poorly sculpted and poorly researched, either looking like caveman stereotypes or generic upright monkeys. If anyone was to tackle this significant group of animals and do it the right way it would of course have to be Kaiyodo and their Dinotales line of collectible prehistoric figurines.

For many people, the first image they conjure up while thinking of the ice age is a large animal with shaggy fur, long curved tusks, with its trunk lifted, bellowing to its herd while crossing the icy steppe. Of course I am talking of the Woolly Mammoth, and even though there are many other fascinating species of mammoth, its the Woolly Mammoth that tends to be made into toy form.

Oviraptor is a genus of small theropod dinosaurs, discovered in Mongolia. This figure belongs to the now extinct Carnegie line by Safari Ltd. It is seen by many fans as the “female” counterpart to the newer 2007 version, due to its more subdued plumage, but it really was never intended to be.

Review: Mosasaurus (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd)

Contrary to its appearance in Jurassic World, Mosasaurus was not a blue whale-sized leviathan capable of effortlessly dragging giant genetic freaks to a watery grave. Still, at an estimated 60 feet in length, it was definitely one of the largest and deadliest marine predators of all time.

Many kings have been released in royal family of dinosaur toys, usually in the form of Tyrannosaurus Rex but, also in the form of Cryolophosaurus, which is jokingly nick named Elvisaurus, the king of the paleo rock and roll. In 2012 CollectA added to the royal family by releasing a prince into their collection.

Fearsome denizens of the Permian, gorgonopsids were rocking the sabre-toothed look hundreds of millions of years before cats came onto the scene. The largest, Inostrancevia, was roughly the size of a black bear and had enormous canine teeth for slashing or stabbing its prey to death.

Depending on how you look at it, repaints are either a blessing or a curse. On the one hand, it can be annoying to plunk down hard-earned money on a sculpt you already own. On the other hand, there’s a lot to be said for a radical new colour scheme that spruces up a familiar toy.
Review: Arsinoitherium (CollectA)

Arsinoitherium was a large herbivorous denizen of swamps and rainforests during the late Eocene and early Oligocene eras. Despite its resemblance to a rhinoceros, it was more closely related to elephants, hyraxes, and sirenians.
Released by CollectA in 2014, this Arsinoitherium toy measures just about 18.5 cm long from the tips of its horns to the end of its tail.

Apatosaurus was a large, robust, long-necked, small headed sauropod that lived 152-151 million years ago. When the Safari Carnegie line began in 1989 the adult and baby were part of the original line up, and has been part of the collection until the cancellation of the line in 2015.
