Just under a year ago I came to the Dinosaur Toy Forum inquiring about a small Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus figure, an almost forgotten memory of my childhood. I didn’t know who manufactured it or where to find one but with the help of other forum members I quickly learned about the figure in question.

More Jurasic Park I’m afraid – although here we have a figure of an animal actually featured in the franchise. Dilophosaurus was last seen giving Wayne Knight a good seeing-to in the first movie, but proved so memorable that Hasbro were still releasing figures of it for the Jurassic Park 3 line.

Before the mainline sized 3.75″ Hammond Collection came onto the scene this year and became all the rage, there was the ill-fated Amber Collection, a line of figures intended for 1/12 scale collectors. After its launch in late 2019, it saw poor species diversity (too many Velociraptor figures), poor quality control, poor accuracy to the source material at times, and limited distribution globally (mostly online only), etc.

Review: Dilophosaurus (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Attack Pack by Mattel)

Despite its many inaccuracies the Dilophosaurus in the original Jurassic Park was one of my favorite dinosaurs in the entire franchise. Fanciful yes, Spielberg deliberately altered the Dilophosaurus for his film for an added punch, and being the master movie director that he is, it worked.

In the world of paleoart and paleomerch, it’s very common to see artists and toymakers draw inspiration from the imagery of other creators. Often this can be a good thing and a chance to reinforce contemporary understanding – consider how many vintage toys drew from Charles R Knight and Rudolph Zallinger – but sometimes it ends up becoming flagrant theft of another’s hard work.

Dilophosaurus has become very well known as a result of its appearance in Jurassic Park, where it approaches the would-be burglar Dennis Nedry in a friendly manner, but then becomes angry and spits venom at him, much like a modern cobra.

Review: Dilophosaurus (other one) (Jurassic Park by Kenner)

Following yesterday’s review of the electronic Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus, let’s look now at its more basic counterpart in the line – the classic ‘water pistol’ Dilophosaurus, among many people’s earliest and most fondly remembered dinosaur toys. It was the first JP toy I owned, actually.

Up for review today is the ‘new for 2014’  Dilophosaurus by Papo, available from Amazon.com . Dilophosaurus was a medium-sized carnivore from the early Jurassic. It was memorably depicted in the Spielberg film “Jurassic Park” as undersized, with a frill and venom spitting like a cobra.

The Legacy Collection line is one of the most controversial assortments of the Mattel Jurassic World toy line, what with having very poor distribution worldwide except for the most part in the US, and only at Target stores due to it being a retailer exclusive (exceptions being the Spinosaurus, etc).

Review: Dilophosaurus (Sideshow Dinosauria)

On November 8, 2012, Sideshow offered the first preview image of the Dilophosaurus statue. This choice of species does not come as a great surprise to many of us, as we all know that this creature was featured prominently in a rather successful film in 1993.

Dilophosaurus has been a staple dinosaur ever since it appeared in a certain 20-year old movie that many companies like to pander to. Despite the inaccurate appearance in that movie, most companies base their Dilophosaurus on the real thing to an extent, making sure that their models lack a extendable frill.

Review: Dilophosaurus (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd)

Wow. Where do I start? This is one fantabulous replica, and it is new for 2009. It doesn’t surprise me that Safari ltd. decided to make a Dilophosaurus for 2009– After all, the only other dilophosaurs they made were the peculiar Carnegie pair from over a decade ago.
